Obesity may affect cancer patients' outcomes

Summary: Obese people are more prone to certain types of cancer, but obesity also increases the chance that the cancer will come back, as well as death. Studies showed that women with obesity were more likely to die from breast cancer than women with average BMI. Many people know how smoking can lead to cancer, but not many realize the dangers of obesity as well. Obesity is starting to become the new leading factor of cancer.

Connection: In health class, we have learned about and discussed lifestyle diseases. Obesity is one of the major ones, and is becoming more and more common.

Question: How can you prevent obesity in you and other people? What are some other risks of obesity?

  1. I can prevent obesity in myself by watching what I eat, and staying away from bad foods, and for other people, bring up facts and studies on the bad food. Some risks are certain cancers, not being as active(depends condition), heart related issues, diabetes, etc.

  2. Personally, i can prevent myself from getting obese by watching what i eat and what i buy. I now as a young boy sometimes i can't prevent that because my parents buy the bad foods which then i can prevent myself from eating them. I think that could be a big factor in little kids getting obese because their parents just buy what the kids want. I think some other major risks could possible be diabetes and heart problems.

    1. I agree. Many kids nowadays may be becoming obese due to how parents love to "care for their kid" and get them only what the kids what, such as chips, soda, etc. Spoiling your kid can have negative consequences.

  4. I prevent myself from becoming obese by watching the things I eat and the amount of exercise. I try to do more exercise and eat less junky foods such as burgers and such. Also for my body type it is harder to gain fat, so I must eat a lot of fatty foods to become obese and heavier. There are many risks of being obese, Type 2 Diabetes is and example on a risk. Some others are high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

  5. You are in control of your own health therefore can't exactly prevent obesity to others. Definitely watch what you eat and be physically active. If you have a friend dealing with obesity help them cut down on fattening food and hit the gym together once in a while. Although at the end of the day it is up to them what to do about their health care. Obesity is a disease that affects you in many ways and will have a long term defect.

  6. You can't really prevent obesity it's in your own hands if you eat less junk food you won't gain weight and eat more healthy foods like vegetables fruits and etc. Problems that obesity can lead to are heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and you can lessen your years of living.

  7. For myself, I would keep track of what I a consuming from high sugar content drinks to salty chips. But for other people, you cant really do much since it is their choice of what they are putting in their body. Though you can influence them to make healthier choices by showing them what their food is doing to their health on the long run. Other risks of obesity might also be the portion sizes that we do not really follow.
