Summary of article:
Soda consumption is at its lowest level in decades, due to the rise in obesity and diabetes. Coca-cola is trying to introduce smaller sizes to the teen market.
The amount of sugar in one 20 ounce bottle of soda equals 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is the recommended daily allowance of total sugar intake. People who drink soda (non-diet) may gain weight, develop type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and suffer from a stroke. Current studies show issues regarding the effects of soda on the teen brain involve problems with learning and memory. Diet drinks containing aspartame and caramel coloring are potential cancer causing ingredients. Break free of your soda habit in a healthy way and overcome your cravings using suggested tools for success.
Connection with health class:
What happens in your body when you drink soda? Within 20 minutes your blood sugar spikes and body starts turning sugar into fat. Within 40 minutes the caffeine has been absorbed into your body and your blood pressure rises. Within 45 minutes your brain increases dopamine levels. Within 60 minutes your blood sugar crashes, and you may crave more sugar.
My question for health class:
Have you given up soda and why? If not . . .
Can you try to give up soda for 2 or 3 days and document the changes/responses in your body?

I only drink soda on weekends (not every weekends) and special occasions. I use to drink more but when I found out that it was so bad for me I stopped drinking as much. For example last time I drank soda was about 2 weeks ago I think.
ReplyDeleteI have not completely given up soda, because I drink it occasionally. For example, I drink it at special occasions. Like the article said, I think it is good to avoid soda as much as possible so that obesity rates won't rise. However, I think it is acceptable to drink soda once in a while. The last time I had soda was a week ago.

ReplyDeleteI gave up soda last year because my coaches and parents emphasized the damage that it would do. But, I occasionally have carbonated drinks at parties or at special occasions. I think I can go 2-3 days without soda because the last time i had soda was a couple months ago.
ReplyDeleteI gave up soda awhile ago because I know it's not worth the damage to the body. And my coach is strict on what we eat and drink to make sure we're healthy and prepared for any of our next events. I want to take care of my health and keep away from things that will break down my body.
ReplyDeleteI haven´t given up soda completely. I usually drink it on weekends or special occasions. I used to drink more soda, but it was healthier for me to drink something else like water or juice. I could stay days without soda because as the article says, it contains lot of sugar and it´s better to avoid it.
ReplyDeleteI have given up soda for quite a while now. A few years ago, my family stopped buying soda in an effort to be healthier. I find that since my family doesn't keep a supply of soda and sugary drinks in our refrigerator, I don't really crave them any more. If I ever feel like drinking something bubbly, I'll mix fruit juice with sparkling water.
ReplyDeleteI haven't completely given up on soda. I haven't because it's kind of a stress reliever for the end of the school day where I can just sit down and relax. I know it's not healthy for you but it keeps me going when I'm doing my homework and it's always refreshing on a hot day. I could and have gone without soda for a few days in a row and I've never had any serious changes. I could go without it but it's always nice to have one every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteI've never really had to "give up" soda because I don't drink it often at all. My parents rarely buy it and even when we do have it, I don't drink it that much. I don't crave it at all, either. I find getting to drink soda as some sort of privilege in my household, so it's nice to have every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteWhen you first told us about this, my thoughts went straight to "Oh, I rarely drink soda anyways." In the time since, I've realized I drink more soda than I thought I did, but still not much at all. I pretty much only drink tea and milk, with the exception popping up every now and then. Pretty much my whole family lives without many sweets: we still haven't finished the candy we were handing out at Halloween last year.
ReplyDeleteI guess I could say I gave up on soda. I rarely drink it now. My family never buys soda, and the only occasions where I will drink soda is if I eat at a fast food restaurant, and even then I will usually get a smoothie. I'm not even sure when the last time I drank soda was.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really given up on soda because I only drink it when I go out to restaurants and my parents don't encourage me on drinking or eating stuff with a lot of sugar in it. I only drink soda about once a month and I don't mind that because now I mostly drink stuff with less sugar such as lemonade or iced tea and stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to give up soda and I lasted a few months. The only time I drink soda is at special events or occasions. I don't really like many sodas, so I do not crave it often. I usually go for a healthier alternative
ReplyDeleteI probably drink more soda than I realize, but I don't think I drink too much soda. My parents only let me drink soda on a special occasions, and we don't usually have it in the house unless we hosted a party. Consuming less soda is a good start to becoming healthier, but I also think that it isn't awful to have it every now and then.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have given up soda. I gave up soda, because I knew it was unhealthy, and I just lost my interest in it. When I gave up soda I felt a lot better and more healthy, but once in a while I will rarely have a soda
ReplyDeleteI haven't given up on soda. I only drink it on special occasions and my parents don't want me drinking it. I usually drink it once a month. I usually drink water whenever I am thirsty. I think having soda once in a while isn't bad, but not having it is better.
ReplyDeleteI haven't given up on soda.I can go months without drinking soda I only drink it on special occasions which are once a month.I sometimes get soda from fast food restaurants but that's about once a couple of months. On special occasions I do tend to drink a couple cups of soda, but as long as I'm not addicted it's okay.
ReplyDeleteI have given up on soda. When I was younger I wasn't allowed to drink any soda so every chance I had to drink some I would. After stopping I realized that whenever i was drinking soda I felt very heavy. I never had enough energy to do simple tasks which would make me feel left behind. whenever I would drink soda I would have a really bad headache which would last for hours. Giving up on soda was a very important health choice, it makes you feel more confident about yourself and gives you the passion to be able to do things that you normally don't do. You always want to explore things about yourself and you can't do that when you're drinking soda even though the commercials make it look like you can.
ReplyDeletei only drink coke on special ovations or weekends but i don't really think i can give it up because i am so addicted to it but i could try and maybe do it but fail
ReplyDeleteI haven't given up on soda; however, I only drink soda during special occasions, such as at restaurants or sometimes on weekends, adding up to about once every week. Although having soda is unhealthy, drinking it occasionally won't harm you severely. It's only if you drink too much that it will harm your body.
ReplyDeleteI rarely drink soda at all, typically only on special occasions like partys, or events, I only drink a soda once every three months or so, I can definitely give it up for 2 to 3 days because I never drink it for more than one day anyways. I used to drink it a lot, but my mom already intervened and cut way back on it. Ever since then I have never really drank much soda.
ReplyDeleteNo, I have not completely given up soda. I don't drink soda very much as it has a colossal amount of sugar and we never have a supply of it at home. I could definitely give up soda for months if I was asked to. However, I don't see an issue with having a can of soda every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteI have given soda when I stopped eating sugar for a month. I didn't really miss it because i would just drink regular plain soda water. Its almost the same thing except its not bad for you. I think I am going to stop drinking soda again.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried to give up on soda because I'm too lazy to go to Safeway to get some. That could be a good thing though. I have had 4 cases of different soda in my fridge and I drank a lot but as soon as I ran out, I stopped. I haven't drunken any soda since. I sometimes use it as an intensive to finish my homework when it's late at night.
ReplyDeleteI have not given up soda, but I can not drink it as my parents limit my intake of anything unhealthy. Only occasionally do they buy soda, and only on vacations do I get a sip. After I intake carbs, or eat a lot, I feel great for a few seconds, but then I begin to feel sluggish and/or sick. When I drink soda, there is a increase in energy, but then, I get a dry feeling in my mouth, and I have nausea or headaches. After 2 or 3 days of "healthy" eating, I feel better.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I've always stayed away from soda and any other kind of unhealthy diet. Well, of course, I would sometimes (once or twice in two months) have a little sip of it. However, during that time of trying the soda, I'd always not have enough room for the proper meals because of the fullness from the soda. I try to eliminate the thoughts of not having the soda, even though I don't drink it that often anyways.
ReplyDeleteI don't normally drink soda unless I'm really thirsty and there's nothing else to drink.(gosh! my brother really needs to read this article, because his life is basically revolving around soda and soda is his life) I was kind of surprise that drinking soda can "impaired memory and cause trouble learning".So thank god that I don't have it often. However having soda once in a while isn't that bad, but not having any is much better.
ReplyDeleteI rarely drink soda because I find no need for it. I know it is bad for me and if I crave a sugary drink I drink a fruit based juice. Because soda is reserved for only special occasions I find that I never feel the need for it. Choosing water instead I stay properly hydrated and cut out the unnecessary copious amounts of sugar.
ReplyDeleteUnremarkably I do not drink soda unless if I'm at a social event or if I'm thirsty and there isn't anything else to drink. On a daily basis I would drink soda. In addition to that one year I gave it up for lent and got used to not having it all the time and now I rarely drink it which I'm glad I don't anymore because of how unhealthy it is and what it can cause. I would be able to give up soda for 2 to 3 days because I have done it before and I have no problem doing it again. Not drinking soda for a while wouldn't affect me in any way because it's not good for anyone and it's not something I live on.

ReplyDeleteI have given up on soda consumption months, or even years ago. The reason being that it was simply not as a choice of edible products that was available to me on a daily basis. And if it isn't around me or in a place where it could tempt me, I find it quite easy to forget it ever existed and stick with other types of products.
ReplyDeleteLike most kids my age I haven't completely given up soda but I do try and stay away from it because i know the effects it can have on my body and how it can affect my health. I mostly stick with water and if I'm craving soda I go for some type of juice. Juice still isn't the best thing because it still has a lot of sugar in it but its better than soda.
ReplyDeleteI have given up soda for the past two years because I am aware of its side effects. The only time I would ever drink soda would be during special occasions. I usually stick to drinking water and natural coconut juice because it is a whole lot healthier for me.
ReplyDeleteI have given up soda. I only drink soda on special occasions because I know it is bad for me. If I ever crave a sugary drink, I drink natural juices because I know that they are healthier for me. I also never found a particular liking for sodas to make me want to drink them all the time.

ReplyDeleteI have given up on soda. I only drink it on special occasions such as parties and stuff like that. Soda has a lot of sugar in it, and it is bad for your health. Usually when I crave soda, I go and drink a few glasses of water.
ReplyDeleteI have given up on soda. In fact I had given up soda about 3 years ago because I realized how bad it s for your body. I have also found that I don't really like it because of the carbonation and if it is too strong, it will make my eye water. Since I have the choice between water and soda, I always choose water.
ReplyDeleteI have given up on soda, except every once and a while. This is because in one can there are over 9 teaspoons of sugar/high fructose corn syrup. Instead I drink something healthier if I am thirsty
ReplyDeleteI haven't given up on soda. I like soda but I usually only drink it at restaurants and during dinner sometimes. Usually I drink Water or juice. If I had to give up on soda I could .
ReplyDeleteI've never given up soda, nor have I ever started. Since I was born my parents have known better than let me drink soda. I rarely drink soda, and when I do it's most likely on special occasions (like when the world ended back in 2012). For the longest time I've known its unhealthy, but I haven't known why until recently.
ReplyDeleteI have not given up on soda. I only have soda on the weekends or on rare occurrences on the weekdays. I do not crave soda what so ever.
ReplyDeleteI have not given up on soda. I mostly drink them when I go to a party or fast foods my mom never brings soda to our house so i mostly drink soda like once a week
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little, my parents taught my siblings and I that soda was an adult drink and that we couldn't have it. I am glad my parents did that, because that way I never got hooked on soda, and it has never become one of the drinks that I drink regularly. In fact, I've only had soda once or twice in my whole life. I wasn't introduced with the taste when I was young, so now I don't like the taste and I don't enjoy any type of carbonated drink. Like the article says, people now realize the horrible things that can happen from consuming too much soda and are doing their best to avoid it. It is sad to me that so much can happen just from a little can of sugar. However, it is good to know that people are working towards keeping their consumption of soda low because now they know what really happens when they make the seemingly insignificant decision to have a drink of soda.
ReplyDeleteEven though I was introduced to soda when I was little I knew that soda wasn't really that good so I just drank water and now that I am older I drink a little more soda than when I was younger but it is usually during parties or other family get together and sometimes I gouge down a lot of soda in a day and I really don't feel well after that so after a while I have come to give up soda unless it's a party and even there I usually drink punch other than soda so with out soda it is really making me a lot healthier than if I did drink it.
ReplyDeleteI gave up soda in June after Graduation. I haven't had any since. I only drink milk and water now. I wasn't told to do this it was just a personal choice. I just wanted to see how long I would last and I'm actually really surprised I made it this long. I'm trying to go for 6 months without soda and if I can do that I'm going to try to go for a year.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had any soda in 3 weeks just because it's not something I buy a lot. When I don't drink soda I notice that I don't always crave sugar and I feel a little better throughout the rest of the day. I try not to drink soda a lot, instead I drink water or some other kind of drink.
ReplyDeleteI think drinks like soda and energy drinks are a poison to our society because they have a lot of sugar in them which is extremely unhealthy for us. For me, i only drink soda at a social event so its never at my house, up to this day i have never had an energy drink because those are extremely unhealthy.
ReplyDeleteI don't drink soda at all anymore, because I do sports so I have to watch what I put in my body. I want to be healthy when I am older, so I can do activities I enjoy. I don't want to be sick, so I try to stick to drinking water.
ReplyDeleteI usually never drink soda unless it's for a special event. I have to admit that I have cut down on sodas for a few months but, once or twice I may have some. It would be fairly easy to resit soda for 2-3 days though the last time had soda was 2 months ago.
ReplyDeleteI rarely drink soda because I know how bad soda is for you,the only time i drink soda is when I go to a fast food resteraunt , at home i never drink soda because my mom doesn't buy soda because she knows how bad it is.
ReplyDeleteI usually never drink soda because it's unhealthy. The only time I do drink soda is when I'm eating out for lunch or when a friend offers me it. Other than that I usually only drink soda about once a month.
ReplyDeleteI never really drink any soda. I drink only on special occasions. Soda as many of us know has so much sugar in it. The sugar makes me very energetic then after about an hour I become really tired as though I just woke up.Though when I have soda I try not to devour it very fast and I dont drink it all at once.
ReplyDeleteI rarely drink soda but I drink a lot of juice.I drink soda usually at parties or restaurants because they have the "rare" ones haha. But I don't think I can quit soda because thats crazy and its good...yeahh.
ReplyDeleteI found it pretty easy to get out of the habit of drinking soda. I occasionally drink soda when I am at events or on certain holidays. I do not drink soda because I was taught at a young age that it has way too much sugar and is quite unhealthy to consume so many unnatural ingredients.
ReplyDeleteI have given up soda before. I only drink soda on certain occasions because it has a lot of sugar as you can see and sugar turns into fat. If i ever have the feeling to drink soda i try to drink sparkling water. Because it is a lot more healthy for you. I like soda sometimes as an example if i haven't drank it in a while i crave it. sparkling water isn't the best thing but its better than soda. Not drinking soda for a while will affect me because i crave it.
ReplyDeleteI dont drink soda at home i usally go for real fruit juice, water ,or milk, when ever I am at a party I try to find another option other than soda. My parents always told that soda is bad for you when I was young so I am not dieing just because i dont a can of soda in front of me. Personally I find that its good to know the real truth on soda even if I dont drink , maybe it will help someone quit the unhealthy habit.
ReplyDeleteI haven't completely given up soda, but I definitely do not drink it every day, or even every week. I only get soda and certain occasions, so it's not very often. I drink smoothies or juices instead when I'm craving a sweet drink. I don't drink soda very often because my parents have told me that it's very unhealthy, since it has extreme amounts of sugar and most of them have caffeine too. My parent's also monitor when I'm allowed to have things like soda so even when I do sometimes crave it I can't have it.
ReplyDeleteI have not given up soda because I don't drink it everyday. I only drink Soda on special occasions. I can give up soda for a long time, more than 2 or 3 days. My parents also don't let me have to much soda. For example not more than one can a day. Since I have a large family, the sodas usually are gone by the the second day.
