Healthier Choices

Date: September 28, 2014

Summary: In Chicago an organization called Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities (HKHC) replaced vending machine foods, with healthier snacks. A recent study
by Northern University said that during the first fifteen months, vending machines increased from $84-$351. Each machine was required to state the nutrition standards. These standards are that snacks can't contain more than twice their serving size, snacks must be free of trans fat, and no more than thirty-five percent of their weight can be from sugar and sweeteners. Instead of candy and cookies, there are granola bars, fruit snack, and baked chips. In the past couple years the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created new nutrition standards for school lunches.

Connection with Health Class: So far we have been discussing about obesity, diabetes and we have been bringing healthy snacks for movie days. As teenagers we tend to choose the junk food over the healthy snacks because it taste better. Our body responds to all the sugar we eat and we can develop diabetes. The more junk we eat, the more we can get obese, because all these small snacks add up. It is very important to keep track of what you eat.

Questions for Health Class: In a week how many times do you get snacks from a vending machine? Do you get the junk snacks or the healthy snacks? Do you keep track of what you eat? If you do, is the food you eat healthy?

  2. In terms of vending machines, I've can't remember a time when I've actually used one for snacks. The only time I've used a vending machine that I can recall is when I was thirsty and used a vending machine for water. I think the biggest reason for this is because my parents are against unhealthy foods, and vending machines are not typically considered healthy, which reflects in me not having the desire to use vending machines . I don't normally keep track of what I eat, but from what I do know about what I eat, I would can say that there are times when the only option is going out and eating some not so healthy foods because either it's too late to cock or laziness takes over. There are also times when we have had only healthy cooking and have left out unhealthy foods completely.

  3. I one week I did not get anything from a vending machine, and to be truthful I really never go to vending machines for food or drink. If I get a snack from a vending machine it will probably be healthy, unless I am really truly craving something sweet/unhealthy. When I do eat vending machine food I always keep track of what I eat water it is healthy or unhealthy. Most of the food I eat is healthy, unless I intentionally want something unhealthy.

  4. In one week I usually will get 2 or 3 snacks from a vending machine. Normally I will get the junky snacks because the vending machine is dominated by junk foods, and the small variety of healthy snacks they have are not ones I like. I, for the most part, keep track of the foods I eat, not so much what is consists of. The foods I usually eat are not very healthy, but I get at least 1 serving of vegetables.

  5. In one week I usually pick a couple things from the vending machine because I get hungry at brunch. Now I try to stay away from them because they're not as good for you, and now that I'm trying to eat healthy I'm trying my best to stay away from them.

  6. It has been a whle since I have bought food or a drink from the vending machine. And when the time comes and I would want to get something from the vending machine, I would try to get something on the healthier side. Most of the time I keep track of what I eat, that is because I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  7. It has been about 3 months since I last bought something from a vending machine. Although if I were to buy something from the vending machine right now, I would buy the healthier choice. I do not keep track of what I eat, but I know that what I eat is not unhealthy because my mom makes my meals.

  8. I usually don't purchase anything from vending machines, except for water and Gatorade, because I usually bring my own snacks to school. To be honest, I only buy items from vending machines only once per month. But when I do purchase food from vending machines, I usually get the junky snacks, but sometimes I buy some of the healthy snacks as well. I don't keep track of what I eat, but I know that I usually eat healthy just so that I can maintain a healthy diet.

  9. I normally wouldn't purchase things from the vending machine except for water or a quick energy bar after P.E., since I get hungry. Therefore, it would considered to be a healthy snack. I do also keep track of what I eat, such as staying away from McDonald, and etc. I usually eat rice with vegetables and/or some type of meat.

  12. I know eating from a vending machine is not very good for you but when all there is at high schools or parks, sometimes that is what you have to eat. In about a week i sometimes will eat something from a vending machine about 3 times. I usually spend some of my day telling myself why did you eat that or you did you choose that because you could have chosen something else but yes u do watch my food.

  14. I usually don´t get nothing from the vending machine, mainly because I don´t like the food in it, and because I know is very unhealthy to eat those things. Instead, I prefer to eat something else such as a healthy sandwich, or homemade food. I usually don´t keep track of what I eat, but I don´t like to eat unhealthy food because I know it´s not good for my body so many calories, although it´s not bad if I eat fast food once week, because we don´t have time to cook or because we are running out of time

  15. I usually get food from the vending machine maybe once a week. I do not get anything healthy because there is barely any healthy foods. The "Reduced Fat" chips are actually worse for you than the regular ones. I feel like vending machines should have more real healthier choices for students you pick on.
Usually at home I do not eat unhealthy foods. I have never seen or eaten a vegetable that I don't like. Eating healthy is a very important thing in our household and it is something I am very used to doing.

  16. I get foods from the vending machines at least 3 times per week. I don't get anything healthy because there are no healthy snacks. However, even if there was any healthy snacks, I would not buy them as they do not taste good. I really don't care if the vending machines had healthier choices, only 1) Taste 2) Gummy Bears and Cheetos. I do not have any opportunity to eat these snacks at home, therefore I eat at school. Our lifestyle is healthy if I say so myself.

  18. I usually get foods form the vending machines at least 2 to 3 times a week. I never get anything healthy in the vending machines because anything healthy in the vending machine tastes bad. I sometimes keep track of what I eat for special occasions like before a meet and after a cross county meet.

  19. I usually don't buy food from vending machines because they only have unhealthy foods. I don't watch what I eat either, but my parents eat pretty healthy in general, so I naturally like healthier foods. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables daily, and try to maintain a balanced diet.

  20. I usually get food from the vending machine three times a week. I usually get junk food because it tastes better and I do not get to eat them at home. I keep track of what I eat and because I only eat junk food from vending machines, I think I have pretty good eating habits. I have started to eat less junk food from the vending machine these last few days which means I am constantly trying to regulate how much junk food I eat.

  21. On a weekly basis, I would usually get one or two snacks from the vending machine, but only under dire circumstances. I wouldn't say I'm proud or anything, but I haven't gotten anything from the vending machine for about a few weeks. On the contrary, I do not keep track of what I eat at all, but I tend to stay away from foods that my mind registers as rather harmful to my body. I would hope most of the foods I eat to be healthy, but I can't really tell for sure. However, I do take the time to eat a bit of veggies and fruits each and every day.

  22. I usually eat snacks out of the vending machine everyday. They are mostly protein bars and Gatorade. I always get healthy snacks because junk snacks are very unhealthy for you. I never keep track of what I eat because I know I always eat delicious and nutritious foods.

  23. I find it funny that the vending machine that sells drinks has 12oz bottles Gatorade for $1.75 yet the 20oz bottles of water only cost $1.25 which is great because water is the best choice. Also it's nice that the vending machines try to sell healthier snacks like baked chips and granola bars instead of fried chips and sugary cookies.

  24. Every week, I will get something from the vending machine maybe 2 to 3 times. I usually get the junk snacks, but on the packaging it says "Reduced fat" or something like that. I don't really keep track of what I eat, but I try to stay away from junk and unhealthy food. I try to limit the number of times I go to junk food restaurants.

  25. I rarely ever get snacks from vending machines, because I think that the snacks are overpriced. I usually just bring snacks from home. However if I do, I usually buy unhealthy food. I don't keep track of what I eat, but I usually make sure to get a few healthy foods into my diet

  26. I mostly eat snacks when I am very hungry like when I haven't ate lunch or the whole day. Thats when I go to the vending machines and buy one small bag of chips and water. I also got to vending machines because it's cheaper.

  27. I usually don't get anything from the vending machines, mostly when I'm hungry or something. If I do choose to get something from the vending machine it would be healthy because its healthier. I actually think it was a good idea for them to start putting healthier snacks in vending machines because its better for our health

  28. I don't usually get anything from vending machines but when I do I usually get healthy snacks.I do keep track of what I buy so I balance it out and try not to get too much junk, but most of the time I get healthy things.

  29. I almost never get vending machine food, but still I don't keep track of the other food that I eat, since I do a lot of athletics. When the season is done and over with, though, I will have to start catching my food consumption. Then again, I'll almost certainly naturally eat less.

  30. I rarely go to the vending machines and if I have it's because I hadn't eaten yet that day so I was quite hungry and I happened to have extra money in my backpack. I think that they're helpful when you want to get a snack if you really need to eat something quick but other than that I think they it's bad to rely on them for regular use.

  31. I try to stay as healthy as I can by leveling out my diet with salads, vegetables, or fruits. I don't usually get snacks from a vending machine, unless I didn't have time to make snacks for myself in the morning. It is hard not to eat unhealthy since it's in practically in every shop that has food, but my parents realize this and don't let junk food into the house on a daily basis, making me more prone to eating healthier.

  32. I don't actually remember the last time I went to a vending machine. I don't ever really go to them. If I did go to one I would get something healthy to drink. I Try to make sure that I'm eating healthy things to stay healthy.
