Teen Stress

Date: September 25, 2014

Summary: A recent survey released by the American Psychological Associated reveals that teen stress levels are just as high, if not higher, than those of adults. The stress rates among teens during the school year skyrocket. However, teenagers neglect to realize the effects of not effectively managing their stress. High levels of stress increase irritability, lack of sleep, and overeating.

Connection to Health Class: We have been studying the effects and perception of stress recently. As teenagers, we are susceptible to these bad habits due to stress. As stress decreases the hours we sleep at night, our ability to function decreases as well. Overeating or eating the wrong kinds of food will cause us to gain weight, leading to higher risks of diseases.

Discussion Question: How stressed out are you as a teenager in high school? Do you manage your stress wisely? If so, how? If not, how can you better manage your stress levels to prevent future consequences?

  1. I think the article is right that teens are facing the unhealthy consequences that come with being stressed. These high levels of stress will grow as the years go by, so it may serve as preparation. As a high school student, I think I do a fairly good job with managing my stress but that I am not sleeping as much as I should be. So in order to take care of myself, I think I should manage my time better that way I won’t be as stressed.

  2. I agree with this article's statement; schools give an incredible amount of stress to teens, which can have negative affects on their functionality. As a high school student I definitely don't get the recommended hours to sleep, and due to lack of sleep i probably don't function as well. To manage my stress I take deep breaths and try to take a break from whatever is stressing me out and do something I enjoy.

  3. High Schools aren't helping teenagers at all. There is a huge homework load that the teachers are giving is affecting the way teenagers are learning. As a teenager in high school I am very stressed out, I honestly don't do a good job with dealing with my stress at all. There are so many different ways that I have tried to cope with stress but none work and I always end up getting even more stressed out. I think that if the homework load was lighter students can get more work done efficiently and they will be able to go outside or do the things that they love instead of doing work all day.

    1. I'm in the same situation as you. I don't know how to handle my stress, but I feel as if it's something that people simply go through that doesn't need to be taken care of directly. I wish that we could have less homework, but it seems that as the years progress, the amount of homework increases exponentially.

  4. Since high school is one of the main reasons teenagers are stressed, I think high schools should be taking steps to lessen the workload and focus on really teaching material and not just preparing for standardized tests. As a teenager in high school, I feel very stressed out. I believe I am managing my stress well enough, but since it is constantly on my mind, I don't think that can be healthy. I think if I was better at time management, I would be less stressed out, but I am not really sure of how to make improvements.

  5. The article seems like this should come as a surprise. Of course teens are more stressed than adults. We have a lot more on our plates than they did when they were our age, maybe even more than they do now, but much less experience dealing with it. I don't manage my stress well (bottling it up and breaking down when it gets too much), but I believe I have the ability to deal, at least for now. God knows how much stress I'll feel in junior year.

  6. Personally, I sadley do not take that much interest in my stress. I usually just let things slide or just put my mind on other things. Lately, I've been somewhat stressed between school work/ homework, football practice, and work outs. It's stressful because it's hard for me to find place or time to do homework which is my first priority. Maybe I just have to cutt out extra activities so I won't be as stressed.

  7. As a teen I'm stressed most of the time with school and with all the homework I get each night. I usually manage it by asking for help from my parents. They usually give me good advice but if it doesn't work out I try to solve the problem myself in a different way. I could be more prepared in the future by having a set plan on what I have to do and when I should do it.
