Source:  http://teens.drugabuse.gov/drug-facts/prescription-drugs

Summary: Prescription drug abuse is when someone takes a medication that was prescribed for someone else. It has become a big health issue because of the things that it does to your body. For teens, it is a growing problem. Teens abuse prescription drugs for a many reasons, such as to get high, to stop pain, or because they think it will help them with school work. Most teens get prescription drugs they abuse from friends and relatives, sometimes without the person knowing.

Connection: This topic relates to health class because we have be learning about how it is very important to not take anybody's prescription because it is very dangerous. In a video that we watched we learned some reasons teens today use other peoples prescription. We found that the main reason that teens took illegal prescriptions was because of stress.

Discussion Question: What do you think we should do to avoid Prescription drug abuse? Should schools limit the amount of homework given? How much will it impact teens when cutting down the amount of homework?

  1. I think that the amount of homework and work we get from school adds to the amount of stress that we have. To avoid subscription abuse, we must reduce stress and teach kids the importance of prescription abuse. I think some people feel pressured to take the drugs and others don't understand the defects of using another's drugs. Parents could also cause stress with high expectations. if we go easier on our teens, they might cut down the drug abuse.

  3. I think if homework amounts are reduced they will help decrease the amount of users. As a student, the most stressful part of school is by far the homework. You have to stay up and stay focused and that is the main reason kids use these drugs.

  4. I think with the enormous workload that is put on kids with homework, school, and after school activities that they are becoming very stress which is leading to some of this teen drug addiction. I think the teens are using drugs as a way to either block out all the stress involved with school, or a way to use drugs to cope or help the school stress problem. I think that if we decreased the homework that we would be a lot less drug dependent and that teens would learn more and be less stressed.

  5. I think when people think it helps them in school it doesn't. Its all in their head they believe it helps them when it actually doesn't. Whats helps them is their mentality. I think teachers should work together to find out a decent amount of homework to give because one teacher might think they aren't giving a lot of homework but plus six other classes worth of homework is a lot.
