Summary: In health class, we have already learned about how sleep deprivation affects our physical and mental health. But what really causes sleep deprivation? There are plentiful ways you can get sleep deprived. One of those ways is that for teenagers, their sleeping cycle can shift up to two hours, making it hard to maintain a proper sleeping schedule. Another way is that electronic devices cut into your sleeping time. Using your phones, checking social media, watching TV, playing video games, etc. makes it harder for you to get sleep. One other way is that people have a lot of events going on in their life, like sports, clubs, work, and other time-consuming events.

Connections with Health Class: We have covered the topic of sleep and sleep deprivation and how it affects you postively or negatively. We have gone over how not getting enough sleep can lead to bad grades, stress, obesity, and many risky things. We have watched videos such as "The Science of Sleep,"  we have taken notes, and we have gone on websites learning about the topic.

Discussion Question: How can you improve your sleeping period? Is there any methods you can try to do to help you sleep?

  1. An hour before i sleep i will turn off all electronic devices and save up time to prepare for sleep for example, brush my teeth shower and change then go to sleep. I can also do everything like projects and homework so that i will not stress while sleeping. To sleep i can turn off my phone and keep it very far away to keep my mind off of it as well.

  2. To get extra sleep in the morning, you can prepare everything the night before, so you can sleep in for a few minutes. After school teenagers should try to get their homework done on time with out procrastinating and stay on task. Teachers can also assign homework that isn't as stressful to the student, especially for those who do sports.

  3. To improve the amount of sleep I get, I should probably learn to use my phone less as it can be incredibly distracting before going to sleep and during homework. Also, I think working on procrastinating less on homework would definitely help add more hours during sleep.

    1. I agree with what you are saying. I use my phone a lot as well and I think your strategy on how to have more sleeping time is an efficient one.

  5. I think the most common reason that prevents people from sleeping is electronics. To solve this problem we should keep our electronics out of reach and try not to think about television. To improve my sleeping schedule i try to keep my phone out of reach.

  6. I think a way that teens can sleep better is by having less stress and maybe less homework as well because their are teens that stay up until midnight doing their homework or studying. Other reasons why a teen might have trouble sleeping or might have less time to sleep is because of some kind of depression that the teen has or something saddening or depressing happening in their life that is keeping them awake. One way to help sleep is to try to clear his/her brain out of the thoughts they might have and just try to rest

  7. To improve sleeping period I can do a lot of things. I can try to do my homework a day earlier if possible. I can start homework the second I get home. I need to limit my electronic time like playing games on my Xbox 1 and also my PC but, mainly I should limit my time on YouTube.
