Article Summary: Most adolescents are known for getting around six to seven hours of sleep on a school night. A mother of a 14-year-old questioned whether lights out at midnight and an alarm waking him at 7:30am to get to school on time gave him enough sleep to function well throughout the day. A majority of the boys said it was enough and that they could "Catch-up" on their sleep on the weekends. Experts concluded that Americans in today's century receive an optimal amount of sleep corresponding to their age, and that teens are more likely to fall short compared to anyone else. Dr. Judith A. Owens said in an interview that "Sleep is not optional. It's a sleep imperative, like eating, breathing and physical activity. This is a huge issue for adolescents." Where most teens "blow-off" sleep to go hang out with friends and have "all nighters". According to Dr. Owens, the insufficient amount of sleep they receive risks high blood pressure and heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. School start times, parental pressure and over scheduled days all add into the reasons most teenagers do not get the sufficient amount of sleep and not function effectively through the day.
Connection with Health Class: We had a brief discussion in the beginning of the on the amount of sleep we get and should have. Not everyone receives the amount of sleep they should, this causes an effect with our alertness throughout the day. Things like pressure and over scheduled days add up to the reasons why teenagers lack sleep and have those "lazy-days".
Question: How much sleep do you get (on average) every night? Do you think you get enough sleep? Why or why not? What can you do to improve our time of sleep?
Every night on average i get about 9 hours of sleep. I think i get enough sleep because i am never really tired in any of my classes or even after school i play football and i am not tired. One thing i can do to improve the amount of sleep i get is to get all homework done at school and to eat dinner a little earlier.
ReplyDeleteEvery night I get about 8 hours of sleep. It's a little less sleep than I would like to get. I could improve it by trying to finish my homework earlier, so I could sleep earlier. Even though I don't get too much sleep on the weekdays, I usually get about 9-10 hours of sleep on the weekend.
ReplyDeleteI get about 7 hours of sleep every night. For me, that seems like enough because I am not always tired during class. I can try to go to sleep a little earlier each night to improve my sleep time.
ReplyDeleteOn average, I get around 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep during the weekdays. It is not nearly enough because I find myself constantly tired and even falling asleep. It's really hard for me to improve the amount of sleep I get because I get home from gymnastics practice so late, but I can improve it a little by squeezing in a couple minutes of homework here and there.
ReplyDeleteEach week night I get about 7 hours of sleep and on the weekends I get about 8. I think that this is a manageable about of sleep to be getting but I would much rather get more sleep for I am often tired throughout the day. One way to can get more sleep is by go to bed earlier. I am up late doing my homework and if I start it earlier or stay on task while studying, I will be finished earlier, thus allowing me to sleep for more time.
ReplyDeleteI get an average of 6 hours of sleep due to practices and homework. I would say 7 hours of sleep is appropriate, I try my best to finish all my homework before I head on over to practice. To improve on my time of sleeping, maybe I can eat before practice so I don't use up my time after. But homework is something I personally think must be done, so I'm always willing to finish it up, no matter how long it takes.
ReplyDeleteOn average, I get about 5 hours of sleep per night due to afternoon practice and the amount of homework I need to finish. I don't think 5 hours a night is sufficient, but I do my best to catch up on the weekends. To get more hours of sleep, I could probably learn to work faster and to just procrastinate less on my homework.
ReplyDeleteI think I get about 6-8 hours of sleep a night, mostly because of a busy day or I stay up late doing work or extra curricular activities. To get more hours of sleep I think I should think more about my habits instead of the things I am doing.
ReplyDeleteI usually get 7 hours of sleep which I personally think is not enough. I think it's not enough because I keep waking up very tired wanting to sleep for a few more hours. What I can do to improve my sleep time is manage my time better.
ReplyDeleteOn a weekday, I usually sleep for 7 hours. I know this isn't enough because I am tired for the whole day and have trouble staying awake. To improve my sleeping habits, the main thing I can do is to get my homework done quickly and manage my time better. On weekends, sleep isn't a big problem because I have time to sleep in, so I usually get 8-10 hours.
ReplyDeleteI usually get around 9 hours of sleep every night. I think I get enough sleep because I don't usually feel tired during class, nor having trouble to focus. However, I can still try to get to sleep 15 minutes early, so that I am getting the extra 15 minutes I'm supposed to get for a teen.
ReplyDeleteI usually have 7-8 hours of sleep ever night, I manage my time pretty well so I can go to sleep around the same time every night. and in my opinion i get enough sleep.
ReplyDeleteWhen i was in middle school i would get about five hours of sleep on weekdays. After doing that for two years i think all that sleep i missed has caught up on me because now at around 10:00 i already start to get sleepy. Now i fall asleep at 10:30 and i get about eight hours of sleep on weekdays.
ReplyDeleteI get 7-8 hours of sleep. Im kinda used to getting that amount of sleep. I think i get enough hours of sleep. Im still active at school so thats good.I still try sleeping early sometimes since im in high school
ReplyDeleteI typically get 7-8 hours of sleep on school nights. I definitely think I do not get enough hours of sleep. Although I have gotten used to being tired all day and struggling to keep up in class, I wish I had more time to just chill out and not have to stress so much over all the things I need to get done. I don't think there's a way for me to get more sleep simply because I need all that time to finish up school work.
ReplyDeletei get six to 7 hours of sleep a day due to homework, projects, (etc.)
ReplyDeleteI would say I get about 7 hours of sleep each night, obviously the about varies depending on extracurriculars and the amount of homework. I think that sleep is very important and I would probably be better off with more sleep however at this period of my life it is more difficult to get a lot of sleep. So, I do not think I get enough sleep overall I but there is no way to get more sleep and maintain my grades.
ReplyDeleteI think I get around 7.5 hours of sleep every night. No, I do not think i get enough sleep each night because I am often very tired. In order to get more sleep, I think I need to stop wasting time, stay on task, and plan out my day better.
ReplyDeleteOn a normal school night I would average 6-7 hours of sleep per night. I think this is not enough sleep for a full days work because i can tell when i get 10 hours of sleep I am alert and ready to go through the day but when i got 6-7 hours of sleep i tend to stare off into space and put my head down and try to sleep. I think with two hours of football each night, I can't maintain a proper sleeping schedule, grades, and play sports.

I get about 6-7 hours of sleep a night. It's not nearly enough and I've been trying to work on that. I don't want to take 0 period next year because I want more sleep. I think that limiting extracurricular activities can help kids get to bed earlier. I wish I could get to bed earlier every night but when I'm done with everything at 8, it feels weird going to bed that early. I guess I just have to learn to get to bed as soon as I'm done with my homework.
ReplyDeleteI get around 4 to 5 hours of sleep due to my diagnosed with insomnia. Yes i know this is bad for me. But due to the stress i havent been able to go to sleep no matter how much i try. They said if this goes on for more than a month there going to start giving me medications to help. I am at my 3rd week. Lets see how it goes!
