What effect do bananas have on you?

Article: http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/15/health/bananas-nutritional-benefits/

Summary: Just about everyone knows that fruits are suppose to be healthy for you but, because of the ingredients found in them today they're slightly unhealthy for us in some ways. Bananas are one of America's most iconic and valued fruits because of their sweet taste. However, what makes it sweet is it contains 14 grams of sugar and 3.1 grams of fiber. Bananas are suppose to be eaten when they're ripe but, the more ripe a banana is the higher sugar it contains. Unripe bananas aren't good to eat because they're hard to digest.

Connection to health class: We recently talked about obesity and how we need a better diet so we can avoid diseases but, bananas are providing us what we are trying to abstain.

Question: Do you think bananas are unhealthy for us? If so what negative effect do they have on us? Should we take them out from our diet?

  1. Everybody knows that fruits have some sugar. Otherwise, they wouldn't be sweet at all. But just because bananas, when looked at closely, have something bad for you, doesn't mean they're unhealthy. Plus, different kinds of sugars are different. But really, everything you eat and do is bad for you. Have you ever heard that "there's no such thing as poisonous substances, only poisonous doses"? Or another example: going out into the sun causes cancer, but one can also get cancer from staying inside all of the time.
I think we are too worried about how each and every thing you do can cause harm. Do we seriously have to look at fruits and be shocked that they have sugar? We've known this for a while; it's not like fruits are some "I Can't Believe It's Not Sugar." If you're going to look this closely into everything, might as well cut all food out of your diet.

  2. I think that Bananas are unhealthy if you have too much of them at a time. Though they are also a good source for different vitamins that your body need to survive Its not really about how much sugar it has but by how much added sugar is put in by different companies like GMO or other types of food manufactures. Sugars are used in almost every type of food because of its great flavor but too much isn't good. The GMO companies don't tell you all the added sugar that is put not fruits, cereal or even nuts/vegetables.

  3. All fruit has sugar. Everyone knows this. I don't think bananas are the worst thing we can eat, and I agree with Aech that people are too worried about every little thing we eat. I mean, it isn't bad to take things in moderation, but counting every gram of sugar in a banana is a little over the top. Also, it's not like bananas are only bad. They do have potassium and are high in antioxidants. They also control blood sugar levels and help you digest things. Overall, I think bananas are pretty good for us, and they should stay in our diets.

  4. I still think that bananas are healthy for you. They may have sugar, but it is natural sugar, rather than the artificial sugar that people put in sodas and such. Also, fruits have other things, such as vitamins. The fiber in fruits slows down the body's digestion of sugars, which takes away the "sugar high" that we get from candy. We should definitely keep bananas in our diet. (Plus, they're one of the only fruits that are easy to make smoothies with.)

  5. I think bananas are healthy for you. Every food has its positives and negatives, but for bananas the positives outweigh the negatives. They are a great source of fiber, natural sugars, potassium, and, most importantly, energy. Not to mention they taste great, alone and blended into smoothies.
