How Much Caffeine Is Too Much

http://online.wsj.com/articles/too-much-coffee-may-result-in-caffeine-intoxication-but-specific-risks-and-benefits-are-still-up-for-debate-1414432501

You probably aren’t at much risk of major side effects if you consume up to four 8-ounce cups of filtered coffee early in the day.

Summary: The amount of caffeine a person needs to stay keep them awake depends on the person. For some people, a weak cup of tea is enough to boost them for their day. For others, a double espresso is needed just to get themselves ready. Most coffee drinkers experience the light symptoms like nervousness or insomnia, but a few will experience severe symptoms. It is possible to die from too much caffeine, only if you intake around 140 8 ounce cups of coffee in one day. However to make sure you are not at risk for major side effects, you may only take less than four 8 ounce cups of coffee per day. If you are not experiencing any side effects, then you are okay.

Connection: We recently talked about leading a healthy lifestyle, which includes maintaining a healthy diet. In order to stay healthy, you cannot have too much caffeine because caffeine blocks neurotransmitters like dopamine.

Discussion Question: How much caffeine do you drink in a day? From what do you get this caffeine? (tea, coffee, etc) Does the caffeine benefit you, or do you experience a few symptoms?

  1. I don't drink caffeine very often. If I drink a coffee I usually drink decaf. If I'm drinking a soda there will be caffeine but I stay away from those too. I don't really notice anyhting different when I do drink caffeine. I am able to fall asleep easily and I on't get hyper.

  2. I drink a cup of mocha/cappuccino a day because of my headaches. The caffeine gets rid of the migraine pains which are very severe in my case. Whenever I drink soda it makes my headaches worse. Soda makes me feel very heavy and inactive.

  3. I use to drink coffee everyday last year, and it got me way more hyper than how I already am, and one day I decided to completely stop. Now I drink caffeine occasionally.

  4. I drink a cup of coffee every morning to get my day going because I've been doing it for so long. Because of this, I feel side effects when I don't have a daily dose of caffeine. Without it, I get headaches and feel a lot more tired than usual.

  5. I used to drink tea heartily where I would get several unbearable head aches during the day. And with that result, I concluded that caffeine gave me migraines which affected the way I functioned throughout the day. Since then, I have cut down my tea intake to one cup a day, 3 times a week.

  8. My mom drinks about 4 cups of coffee a day. The worst part about this is that when she doesn't, she gets headaches. I'm trying to get her to drink tea instead of coffee, as it has about 50% of the caffeine as coffee.
I don't drink that much caffeine myself. I have a cup of every morning, but sometimes I don't finish it, and sometimes it's decaffeinated. But when I was younger, I didn't realize that caffeine actually had an effect on people's energy. I thought it was one of those health myths that everyone believes although there's no evidence for it.

  10. I don't drink caffeine...at all. I think of it as unnecessary and don't want to get my body hooked on it. Of course I have trouble waking up in the morning, but there are other ways to fix that than having a cup of coffee. It is important to me that my body is able to function independently, so I can proudly say that I don't drink caffeine.
